Petra Mandy’s 5th Grade Grandparent Essay
2016-2017
I think that my great-grandpa Jim should be the AARP South Dakota Grandparent of the Year. First, he retired from the United States Marine Corp. Secondly, he was a high school teacher. Lastly, he cares for and loves our family and thinks it is important to pass on history, memories, and patriotism to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
I think he should be the AARP Grandparent of the Year, because he retired from the United States Marine Corp. He fought in World War II in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was wounded on the 18th day. He had shrapnel in his shoulder and still has it in his hip. The battle of Iwo Jima was horrible. Six out of eight people in his platoon died there. He is and was very brave.
He also dedicated over half of his life to teaching. After the war he went to college and graduate school. He taught for over 40 years in chemistry and physics. After school and at his house he tutored lots of students in chemistry. He also coached football and kept track of all the scores.
Another reason that my great-grandpa Jim should be the AARP Grandparent of the Year is because he is leaving a legacy for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He passes down the history of our family genealogy. He also shares memories. He taught his grandchildren math through playing cards. He is 90 years old but still remembers everybody's birthday, and he sends a card and gift to all of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids!
Perhaps the most important part of his legacy is his patriotism. My great-grandpa Jim didn’t talk about war for over 60 years. Then he thought it was important, and he needed to pass it on and tell his story. Young people don’t understand so he needed to tell them and share his story. He talks about his friends that died in the war and his memories. He said “War is hell.”
I wish I could spend more time with my great-grandpa and listen to his stories. I wish I could learn more, but I do know that he is a (great), great-grandpa.
My great-grandpa Jim was a part of the greatest generation. Tom Brokaw said that the men and women didn’t fight to be famous or to be recognized, but they fought because it was the “Right thing to do.” I think my great-grandpa Jim should be the AARP Grandparent of the Year, because he fought in World War II. More than half of his life is given for teaching students, and lastly I think he should be the AARP Grandparent of the Year, because he loves his family. He shares his memories, his family genealogy, and his legacy. He did all these wonderful things because, it was the “Right thing to do.”
