Theme for the year: I’m Retired!...Now What?
September 12: Be Informed
Michelle Humann, from the SDRS office in Pierre, will share news and updates
about our pay checks. The SDRS office has developed a checklist of “have you
made plans for your family.” Michelle will bring copies of this checklist.
Bring a friend or a newly retired school system employee.

October 10: Be Alert
Jody Gillaspie heads the Consumer Protection office under the
Attorney General’s office in Pierre. Jody will talk about how to protect yourself
against fraud. She requested to speak for an hour and provide time for your
questions. We will have an abbreviated meeting. The meeting will be open to
the public.

November 14: Be Generous
Amy Iverson, CEO of Behavior Management Systems, will share the variety of
mental health services provided to students and adults throughout the Black
Hills area.
As a non-profit there are things that are not covered by Medicaid or other
insurance. The counselors often use arts and crafts plus games to engage
clients while providing counseling.
Items that are needed: art and craft supplies, games appropriate for children
and youth.

Pegie Douglas thought she could add a bit of holiday spirit with her “Life &
Music of Bader Clark presentation. We will enjoy our holiday festivity at
Westhills Village.

January 9: Be Adventuresome
Mary Jane Chiles writes: It’s never too late to keep the promises you made to
yourself as a child. I loved watching Johnny Weissmuller in the Tarzan movies
and promised myself I would go to Africa and see the wildlife in person. In
high school I got to climb the Mexican pyramid and again promised myself
I would climb the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt before I died. I kept both
of these promises last November. Join me as I share my five week adventure
in Africa.

Melinda Sterling has always loved creating art and enjoys mailing her printed
cards to friends and family. Retirement provided her more time to explore
turning her hobby into a business. On the back of each card is her logo: an
envelope with a request to “mail me!”

March 12: Be Curious
Alan Maas published the book “The Kind Whisper” which
explores the history of the Black Hills which is steeped in regional mythos.
Locations like Deadwood and Lookout Mountain or people like Wild Bill
Hickock and General Custer are all part of the story.

April 9: Be Involved
Jennifer A. Rollins, Lieutenant Colonel, Retired, will relate her career experience
and, importantly, her retirement experiences that are on-going. We can learn
what retiring military personnel offer us and our community.

May 14: Our annual banquet celebration of the 2023-2024 year which will
include Memorial Service, Grandparent Essay Winner, and Awards from the State
Conference. Place TBA?
